Mentoring for boys
This is a new and exciting opportunity for male volunteers to utilise their own life skills and experiences to help teach young boys how to cope with the domestic abuse that they have witnessed or experienced.
Boys who have witnessed or experienced domestic abuse directly or indirectly face tremendous emotional stress. Early intervention with these boys can provide them with the tools and support they need. Alternatives to the perpetrator may not be available as many families are forced to leave extended family behind when felleing domestic abuse. With encouragement from someone whom these boys can talk to, they have a greater chance of achieving academically and ultimately, a greater chance to be contributing members of their society. The project also addresses issues such as caring for parents/siblings, racism, stereotyping, language barriers and bullying.
This project is not straight lined or rigid but flexible enough to have developed a working framework to which our volunteers can bring their own initiative and ideas.
Why Mentor?
The reward for you as a male volunteer is the knowledge that you have helped a vulnerable young person advance not only educationally, but also personally and socially.
Mentoring is a one-to-one caring, supportive relationship or partnership between a mentor and a mentee that is based on trust. This relationship focuses on the needs of the mentored individual and encourages them to develop to their fullest potential based on their own vision for the future.
